Gregor’s Lecture ONE Notes
Design One: ‘Autumn Work in the Frame’
Construction
Stand – welded iron (8mm full round steel) wrapped with peeled bark/fiber of Clematis vitalba. All metal covered with woody character to suit the season.
Wood Structure – Cut driftwood is placed and designed to create rhythm by height and depth. Willow sticks are bound together on top of the frame, front and back of the work. Wooden rings wired on thinner wire wrapped with dry Miscanthus grass – are attached to the willow sticks. These rings look like they are dancing in air.
Water tubes – are simply covered with grass leaves. Very natural effect ‘en masse’
The Botanicals
The flowers are placed in the upper third of the work.
Design – Symmetrical
Style - Decorative
Proportion – Majority of the flowers look upright. Just a bit directed downward
Order – is mainly Parallel with small percentage overlapping ‘Flirt with neighbor’
Contrasts
Natural sculpture crafted by HAND OF NATURE
Vertically oriented Dense wood VS Intricate sculpture crafted by HAND OF MAN
Horizontally oriented
Lightweight and transparent
About Contrast
Wood Expression is as strong as the herbaceous element. It is 50/50 design-wise, not dominance or subordinate, but the focus on the fall season & the expression of Wood Talks must be made significant.
Warmer colors like red, rusty orange, softer greens, apricot, maybe salmon are desirable.
The Effect
The appearance is very strong and decorative, perfect for modern rustic setting. Also not out of place in a traditional ambience.
This work is suitable for placement on a tabletop, buffet or sideboard decoration.
The body language conveyed by this design is solid, balanced, persuasive, seasonal festive, traditional comfort… it shouts ‘Celebration of the Day… of the Fall Season’!! At the end of the day, the feeling is portrayed through the floral work, even each flower communicates the warmth of the season… the technical and practical knowledge skillfully put to practice…. This is the ‘COOL’ Design Thinking.

Design Two: ‘Winter Work in the Rusty Vase’
Its not just designing in a vase…. No way!!! It’s not that simple…. This work has many structural and technical details… also challenging visual balance.
Construction
In the vase is a block of square wood which is squeezed in with additional wedges. An iron rod (1cm diameter and 1.50 m high) has been drilled into the block of wood. A wire structure (1.8mm), a grid of various thicknesses and lengths of Clematis vine (bark has been peeled) made into an asymmetrical figure with longest part directed downward. This holds numerous solid round wooden spheres attached in 5mm wires floating in air, like snowflakes. The wintry feel is conveyed by the openness of the structure (like leafless tree). The group of woodballs are organized in 3,5,8 configuration following the golden rule – main group, side group & opposite group, creating depth and good proportion. Height 8, Width 5 and Depth 3.
The concentration of the structural elements and the herbaceous (flower) elements are in the upper third of the design.
The Flowers are in water tubes, which are covered with peeled bark of Clematis vitalba (grows in the Eifel area).
The Botanicals
The flowers are mostly white with just small doses of green. Green is the vitalizer of floristry – just enough to convey vitalness.
The Effect
This work is a standing piece from the floor. It is an asymmetrical design, a more casual enduring wintery expression. 2 lengths of creamy white felt in mixture with dried brown leaves (organic and natural looking) strung to accentuate the design. The brown is rustic and white is elegant combined together for winter.
This piece is suitable to be placed on the wooden floor, against the stone wall, chimney or beams to make a statement for modern rustic.
I hope it helps to hear the voice behind my thoughts.
